As in other miniature wargames, players use miniature models made of plastic or metal to represent warriors and fighting vehicles. The playing field is a tabletop model of a battlefield, comprising models of buildings, hills, trees, and other landmarks. Players take turns to play through 4 basic game phases. The movement phase where a player can elect to move some or all of his models a set distance measured using tape measures, the psychic phase where any units with psychic ability can attempt to manifest their psychic powers, the shooting phase where the players roll a series of dice to resolve the outcome of any shots fired and the assault phase where the outcome of any physical or hand to hand attacks are determined by dice rolls. Once these 4 phases have been resolved then the second player takes his part of the turn and repeats the process. Usually a game of Warhammer 40,000 consists of five turns; depending on the size of game this can take anything from just a single hour to several days.
